Maria Gabriela Gonzalez & Richard Genge

April 9, 2016 | Ceremony: Plymouth Congregational Church | Reception: The Bath Club

The bride wore an elegant lace and royal organza gown adorned with flower stones by Rosa Clará, and the groom wore a traditional black tuxedo by Hugo Boss. While the wedding could be described as more Venezuelan than German, “our goal was to combine our two cultures,” Maria Gabriela explains.

A year after meeting at a Miami running club and training together for triathlons, Maria Gabriela Gonzalez flew with Richard Genge for a weeklong vacation to his hometown of Berlin, where he popped the question. Inspired by a friend who custom-designed an engagement ring, Richard proposed with an elegant cushion-cut diamond.

After a bilingual Spanish and English ceremony with a German reading, Maria Gabriela and Richard joined guests for a lively reception at The Bath Club in Miami Beach. Magenta lighting reflected off of Avant Gardens’ silver-, ivory- and blush-hued centerpieces with whimsical floating candles and flower-filled mirrored boxes. Late-night snacks included his and hers food stations devoted to cultural comfort foods like beer-braised bratwurst and crispy arepas. As the clock struck midnight, the reception took on carnival mode for Hora Loca, with the couple handing out flags representing each of the 30-plus nations their guests hailed from. They also passed around 120 handcrafted hats adorned with feathers and glitter that took Maria Gabriela’s godmother three months to make. “She really went above and beyond for us,” says Maria Gabriela.

“We learned the value of having a wedding planner,” Maria Gabriela says. “Mayrelis of Elite Planning Firm made sure that everything was on point, handling all the details that typically are forgotten.”

The newlyweds set off on a three-week honeymoon where they explored palaces in Thailand, visited the Temple of Angkor Wat in Cambodia and cruised the Bai Tu Long Bay in Vietnam before heading back to Hanoi for street food tours.
